An ad dating from 1910 for the Quaker Oats Company, the first manufacturer of cereals. The inventor of this then novel breakfast food was Ferdinand Schuhmacher, a German miller who had emigrated to Ohio in the middle of the last century. His partner, Henry Parson Crowell, developed a marketing concept and came up with the old Quaker as the company’s trademark. It was registered as early as 1877. From then on, a flood of advertising etched them in consumer minds. The Quaker appeared on countless magazine pages, posters, and was even painted to the sides of barns and silos.
