Hi Jennifer! Please tell us a little bit about you.
I am a food, farm, product and lifestyle photographer & director in St. Louis, Missouri. When not collaborating with agencies and brands to bring their vision to life, I continue to work on my cooking skills, try to make my garden flourish, and am often designing (and re-designing) my new studio (studio749.com)
When did you first know you wanted to be a photographer?
Dreamt about it from the time I was around 8, figured out I might be able to make a living at it when I was about 22. I am still in awe that this is my actual job. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
You’re inspired by who or what?
The aromas that wind their way through a room, the wisps of light that come through a window in the early morning when all is still, the stained fingers from beautifully messy ingredients, the choreographed dance of a busy kitchen, and the joy & beauty of people gathered around a table sharing memories, laughs, traditions and food.
What has been one of your most rewarding jobs?
Each job comes with challenges and rewards. What I love most and find so rewarding is the quick and creative problem solving that is inevitably part of production life. Being agile and still making powerful imagery – that is rewarding. When I pour my heart and soul into the work and my clients are true collaborators – that is rewarding.
How has the pandemic affected you?
Wow… how hasn’t it? It has been difficult personally, professionally and emotionally. We were quick to adjust to remote shoots and accommodating shoot needs under some difficult circumstances. We took longer road trips when flying wasn’t an option and worked with smaller than normal crews. But it also gave me the unexpected time to pursue personal work, redo my website, and work for small, local, woman & minority owned businesses. That was a very special gift that I plan to continue to prioritize when this pandemic is fully in our rearview mirror.
What is your take on the future of advertising?
I am ridiculously optimistic. The ways we absorb media is faster and consumed at greater volume (and across multiple platforms) than ever before.
As an image creator, and witnessing the shelf life of that imagery firsthand, there is just so much work that needs to be created to stay relevant. It’s a big field with a lot of competition, but the need is vast.
The ways we communicate and the need for superior quality imagery to stand out from all the noise is only going to continue to grow. And to be able to do so with creativity, authenticity, and beauty will be how we stand out from the crowd. I welcome the challenge every day.
