Volvo, 1995: Twister

40 Best Ads of the last 40 years

It was a challenge whether we should choose this Volvo film or Unexpected, an earlier masterpiece for Dunlop from the same team of Kaye, Campbell and Carty (look it up if you’re not familiar). Both films are full of visual riches and use collage-like storytelling to push the boundaries of the senses.

Twister, perhaps, is in some ways a little more orthodox yet more truly filmic and coherent. It sets up a grand engagement by depicting a storm chaser … somewhere in the Midwest, we might guess … a man who, of course, needs a great car to take him right into the ferocity of the all-destroying storm, where he must plant his tornado monitoring unit.

Agency: Abbott Mead Vickers (AMV) BBDO, London
Art Direction: Walter Campbell
Copywriter: Tom Carty
Production Company: Tony Kaye Films
Director: Tony Kaye

"I remember when this first came out — everyone was talking about it. Directed by the inimitable Tony Kaye, it left everyone asking, How did he do it? Stories from the shoot went viral around London. Back then, a Volvo was seen as a pretty boring car. Well, not anymore."
- Graham Fink, multimedia artist, most recently former Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy China

It combines high-energy action shots with moments of great lyricism, dramatic pace changes and surprising edits, and yet the whole hangs together precisely and strongly. And now it has withstood the test of time.
