Andrew, Sandy, Ivan, Katrina – US hurricanes whose names are often associated with global warming tend to impact negatively on
people actually called by those names. So what about changing them to, for example, “Hurricane Michele Bachmann” or “Hurricane
John Boehner”? That, at least, is the proposal being put forward by climate activist movement 350 Action, whose “Climate Name
Change” initiative is seeking to alert politicians to the issue.
Nir Refuah: “Since 1954, the World Meteorological Organization has been naming extreme storms after people.
This campaign changed the system, naming storms after the policy makers who deny climate change. The viral
video linked users to sign an online petition.”
