More than 2,000 people who are autistic of have a learning disability are currently detained at inpatient mental health hospitals, where the average length of stay is more than 5 years.
Patients are subjected to physical restraint, seclusion and segregation and the use of anti-psychotic medication – practices that are deeply harmful and can create lifelong trauma.
Working with an autistic illustrator, we brought to life the real stories and emotions of people who were trapped in a cycle of mismanaged clinical care. Each execution talks to the different emotions people with autism feel. Getting people to understand the urgency of changing the way they treat people with autism.
