A young man – evidently single – is getting
down to his customary morning ablutions,
with every movement becoming
progressively more mechanical. The items
he needs to complete his routines either
fly straight into his hand or activate themselves
automatically. The paper lands in
his left hand, the toast on the plate in his
right, and the TV switches itself on in
response to the kicking of the football.
Even the juice flows out of the carton as if
of its own volition. In brief, a life as
