Carlton Draught: “Slo Mo” # A cleverly produced commercial for Carlton Draught spoofing the slow-motion pathos rampant in advertising for beer. As the spot shows, the slo-mo effect can turn just another night at the pub into nothing less than the stuff true movies are made of. A round of darts, a few glasses of beer that get knocked over. All of these minor occurrences are, when given the currently allpervasive slo-mo treatment, able to take on a new significance, assuming almost
melodramatic dimensions. The musical pathos of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot, albeit with a new libretto (sample: “Slow motion. Men in slow motion. Men look better in slow motion.”), serves to highlight the successful send-up effect.
