More Info

This is an interesting way to compel people to donate more, namely by bringing the person featured on the banknote back to life. In an attempt to raise $20 donations for its community partner, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), Rio Tinto created a world-first mobile experience that brings Reverend John Flynn – founder of the RFDS who is featured on the Australian $20 note – back to life. To make this possible, pioneering AR tech was used, so people could scan the banknote and be told the history and future of this beloved organization.

Matei Curtasu: “Simple and smart! Marcel, Sydney brings to life the story of the face on the Aussie $ 20 note using AR, and for a good cause. This ticks all the boxes for me. It utilizes new technology with WebAR, tells a compelling story that involves light aircrafts (which I’m extremely into), and it inspires people to donate to one of the quintessential Aussie NGOs. It’s not the first, nor will it be the last, time that AR is used on a banknote, but so far it has the best implementation.”
