Mazda “Dog” & “Dolls” [00:30]# The wonderful innovative spots for various Mazda models that were the real surprise winners at this year’s Cannes festival. In “Dog,” a wrinkly dog’s forehead is pushed forward numerous times to illustrate the point that the crumple zone of Mazda cars are tested again and again. In “Dolls,” we see a couple of seat of the Mazda 323, and the VO tells us that now there is even more legroom in this model. “Design” spoofs Mafia movies with an impressively blind “padrone,” who inspects the car bought by his son while the latter bervously awaits the fater’s verdict. The old man’s hand glides over the bodywork of the Mazda MX5 and he finally exclaims, “Una macchina belisima!” The son, a bit long in the tooth for this type of car, sighs with relief. In “Babette” a leggy, silverhaired beauty prances around, snarling at the shop-worn pickup lines served up by some offscreen male. He finaly gives up but not without uttering one last, somewhat threatening “I’m gonna get you.” He would too, the VO tells us, if he had a Mazda MX3, though the way the woman laughs at this announcement suggests that this question is till open to debate. In “Seniors,” an older couple ar sitting in an MX5 while one the soundtrack we hear the famous 60s anthem “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” The man makes a pass at the woman, who smacks him so hard that blood starts gushing from his nose. This, however, seems to turn him on even more, judging from the way he revs up the engine. “That old fashioned feeling of a real sportcar. The Mazda MX5.” The world’s smallest 6 cylinder engine in the mX3 is demonstrated to us by six dwarves in identical jogging suits who perform amazing feats to the sound of an engine running at maximum speed. The fact that all Mazda cars feature specially reinforced paintwork is demonstrated by women sporting beehive hairdos and standing on their heads.
