Renault Clio “Mary Magdalena” [01:20] + “Pilate” [01:30]
The chutzpah of this campaign – originally consisting of three commercials and using scenes from the new testament to sell the Renault Clio – needs to be seen and believed. The spots transport the life of jesus into our times, and so we have a teenage prostitute named “Mary Magdalene” get into the clio with Jesus. They drive to a lake where they engage in a talk about lost innocence and eternal love. In the other, and even more controversial spot, Jesus is seen driving with two thieves in the Clio and the police in tow. Police chief Pilate ignores the plea from a fellow officer to release the innocent Jesus, who finds time to say, “I forgive you. You know not what you do,” before we see a policeman firing his gun.
