Rotterdam Film Festival “Arab Humour”, “Directors of Tomorrow”, “Leather Man” + “Eye” [00:30]# An unusual series of commercials to advertise the Rotterdam Film Festival. In “Arab Humor,” we see grainy shots of a mosque with strange laughter on the soundtrack-which is to tell us that the film festivals going to show comedies from the Arab world. “Directors of tomorrow” shows us a series of hopeful faces that certainly don’t belong to famous directors that are read out on the soundtrack. “See the directors of tomorrow at the Rotterdam Film Festival.” A VO then explains. “Leather Man” presents a guy in harness and chains strapped to some contraption and waiting for his slave mistress who’s apparently gone of to the film festival, leaving the willing victim in this less that comfortable position. “Eye,” the last in our selection, is a spot that should be avoided by all squeamish viewers. For what we see in extreme close up is an operation on someone’s eye. Accompanied by sound effects that remind one of a construction site. “Prepare your eyes for something new. Go see the films at the Rotterdam Film Festival,” is the VO’s comment to these hard to stomach proceedings.
