Licence fees paid to fund public broadcasters
are currently a somewhat contentious
issue. The first spot for South
African Broadcasting Corporation shows,
however, why the fee is worth paying. It
recounts the true story of an elderly couple
who are forced to leave their home
yet are unable to afford a flat to live in
together. When their fate becomes the
subject of a television feature, they are
offered help by a woman whose attention
was drawn to the case by the report.
Similarly, the life of an African boy with a
disfigured face takes a turn for the better
after the public hear about him through
a radio report, and a man helps him to
have an operation abroad. Tagline: “The
power of broadcasting.”
