The business of exploring and extracting
fossil fuels confronts our society with the
challenge of reconciling environmental
protection with human energy needs. The
job of a technical engineer working at energy and chemicals group Shell, for example, is that of making drilling rigs more
efficient. And it is, of all things, his biggest
private problem – the unconventional way
in which his pubescent son sucks the last
drops of milkshake up out of the glass
through the straw – that makes him come
up with the decisive idea of tapping small-
er marine oilfields. Inspiration, thus the
