Although the “little hunger” – symbolized
in the form of a shaggy doll – felt by the
protagonist in this spot is almost impossible to bear, he turns down the snack
proffered to him by a co-worker. Yet even
reading the paper is unable to distract
“hunger” from the sound of its own stomach rumbling. Greedily, he tries to grab
the sandwich of the person sitting next to
him. On his way outside, he only agrees
to come down from the head of his “master” when the latter finally gets out his
Sultana Snack and tucks into it with relish.
