“Black & White,” “Superstar” + “Darkness” [00:30]# A truly world class campaign from Turkey: Three commercials for Tokai lighters that won the ’92 Epica Award for best film in the “Tobacco & Accessories” category. In “Matches & Lighter” white supremacist notions about civilized and native are ridiculed “Superstar” spoofs the world of advertising, where everyone is rich and good looking. “Darkness” is particularly funny. Two guys are sitting on some steppes by a basketball court. One of them is holding up a lit lighter. His pal suggest he should extinguish it. When the other one does so, the park is immediately plunged into darkness. The players on the court protest angrily. The first guy flicks his Tokai and it is light again. Toward the end of all three spots the protagonists lean into the camera and wink at us, saying, “What a lighter!” And, after the Tokai range shot, “What a commercial!”
