Don Smallgoods [00:15]# The inspiration for this character presenting various “Don” brand sausages seems to have been the couple of Czech swingers living it up in the US and played by Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd in “Saturday Night Live.” “Beware of cheap imitations,” this presenter rasps in the “Strasbourg” spot, and uses the sausage to hit the cardboard photo of himself. To present Praguer ham he wears a “Czech” suit and more awful punning follows with him touting Don’s cabana as the best. “There’s none better,” he adds and camera pans to a nun doing a drum solo. For sausages called “Cheese Kranskies,” he goes all black-urban and does some rather uninspired rapping to deliver the product information. For the presentation of Frankfurters he is joined by a vicious looking bulldog whom he upsets quite a bit by calling Don’s Frankfurters “Australia’s best dogs.” We finally see him in a cowboy suit singing the old western folksong, “Rawhide,” as he stirs the Frankfurters in a pot of hot water.
