“Heart,” “Soul,” “Flower,” + “Dream” [00:30]#
The minimalist campaign for the VW Beetle fits perfectly into the legendary tradition of the original Beetle ads from the 60s. One might carp that the spots are little more than “print ads on wheels,” but given the wonderful design of the car, on which the spots focus, this is not so very important. And the headlines that are superimposed on the all-white set, as well as the appropriately retro-sounding yet modern music, capture the essence of this successful resuscitation of a legend. The final spot in our selection differs somehow from the other commercials as we hear a woman (bearing a striking vocal similarity to Rickie Lee Jones) describe a particularly colorful dream she once had while we see the new Beetle appear in the myriad of colors it is available in.
