As we all know, Burger King always likes to mess with McDonald’s – and
this campaign was no different. Running from December 4 to 12, it was
designed to promote the new order-ahead options on its reconstructed
mobile app. A campaign that trolled its great rival because customers
first had to go to a McDonald’s restaurant to order a burger ahead at
BK – but, in doing so, they got their Whopper for just a penny. Hilarious!
And very effective: Mobile sales are said to have tripled during the
promotion – and to have doubled after it ended.
Darre van Dijk: “I work for McDonald’s, and we do some great work for
them, but I can appreciate a good idea coming from the challenger brand
Burger King. They gave away a Whopper for 1 cent. You had to drive to
a McDonald’s to unlock the deal in the Burger King app. Gamification
using geolocation tech. A very funny and smart case.”
